Amber Riihimaki with seam? Empty Amber Riihimaki with seam?

Post by Alex_s June 24th 2012, 5:41 pm

Picked this up yesterday - thought it might be Riihimaki but it's got a seam that seems to be a poured seam, in that it goes down both sides and runs around the top. I haven't got any similar pieces with seams. Any idea what this is?

Doesn't look the right shape for Riihimaki - too bulgy. Maybe French.

That's interesting. Who would have been doing such a thing in France?

Oh, just thought - what about JC Glass? I've seem some quite chubby ones under their banner.

These are a bit of a charity shop speciality 'round these parts.

No idea who made them, though.

Bit of a fashion victim type of vase, I'm afraid.

That's the second time someone's mentioned Zalloni in response to one of my threads and it's a new name to me. Damn, I like his stuff too *locks wallet*

Those amber ones are all over Ebay at the moment though. I smell a rat!

Agreed -- "wohl" is the most dreadful word on German ebay...

I vaguely remember that these vases were once ID'd on the GMB as being some sort of bath salt containers sold very recently in drugstores.

Jumping For Joy Yes, or "Murano Czech WMF studio glass sommerso midcentury Seguso?"

"wohl" means "likely by", and then add a famous maker / designer...

I don't think these have been ID'd but they are not new - mid 20th century perhaps - and way too heavy to be sold filled with anything. And they are not hyacinth vases either, though they work used as such.

They have a seam because they are machine blown in a two part mould and and the mould has to be opened to get them out. It's a very common technique but you don't always see the seams because a) it has been finished to remove it or b) the pattern hides the seam.

This gives you the idea http://www.wisedude.com/science_engineering/bottles.htm but here the bottle is dropped out of the mould. In this case of this vase the mould was opened up.

Glass is not really poured (except perhaps in sheet glass making); it has to be excessively hot to pour.
