Another Clappison pepper pot Hornsea "onion" Clappi10Hi,
Here's another retro type pepper pot that I recently picked up on my travels, could it be another Hornsea Clappison design please?
Thanks again,
Bryn

Hi Dan,
No markings I'm afraid but then there were no markings on the pepper pot I posted a month or so ago, that turned out be the Alpine design.

Got it - actually I knew the name before I looked at the book but doubted myself!

It's definitely Hornsea, from 1963 and the design is called 'Cordon' - it's part of a cruet set as with your 'Alpine' pot. I'm fairly sure it's a Clappison design but I haven't found confirmation anywhere about that yet.

I read on the web that the entry for cordon in the Hornsea book is wrong?

Ah, I think I *might* know what they're referring to. In the book it says it's an 'onion' shaped set but Cordon isn't - the onion shaped cruets were 50s slipware items and quite a different shape from Cordon.

I wonder if this is the information that's wrong, rather than the 'Cordon' attribution itself.

The problem I have with that is that it doesn't say WHICH book (there are many), who it was that said it was 'wrong' or indeed what it is that's supposedly wrong.

The Hornsea book I have was written by Pauline Coyle with John Clappison's direct involvement. I still have Pauline's email addy I think so I'll email and ask her about it myself. Do one of you lot want to contact TC?

LOL very good Bryn!

With regard to your pot - we're not going to get a quick answer on the alleged error so, if I were you, I'd list it as Cordon from 1963 since that's what's in Pauline's book currently. When/if we find out it's incorrect then we can make it known here on the forum.

I got the information from www.hornsea-pottery.co.uk via email. I can't quite remember the exact details of the email but i do know the one on my site is Cordon.

The  "Cordon" cruet is correctly shown here by Tigerchips
(lower down the page) but I don't think that this design is
specifically mentioned anywhere in the book.

https://www.20thcenturyforum.com/t186p30-hornsea-pottery

The book was done in 1998, and so much info has come to light
since. There are quite a few errors which we mostly know about
now. There was talk of a new book, as there are none left now,
but just a small volume of corrections and new information would
probably be a welcome addition.

This is one piece of the "Onion" cruet set, incorrectly named in the Hornsea book.

8 years talking about a pepper pot.
Imagine our reaction to a full cruet!
