Slab press moulded Japanese Style Bottle
Helloooo,
I was really happy to find this really nice example recently.. (Although there is damage to the underside of the neck.)
I had previously seen a very interesting thread on this forum discussing Shoji Hamada's Slab build Bottles..
which conjured some brilliant, expert information I would have been hard pressed to have found and read anywhere else.
I've become aware of some similar pieces by Bill Marshall and John Jelfs while trying to ID this.
There seem to be 2 sqaure impressed stamps on this piece but barely visible..quite glazed filled I'm afraid.
Any thoughts are most welcome.
Thanks.

Re: Slab press moulded Japanese Style Bottle
Very much in the Anglo/Japanese Leach style. Made by a potter of the Leach school. It is clearly made by a good professional Given the bottom, it was probably a second. But 'Leach School' now covers a lot of potters. That rather flashy design of the front reminds me a bit of the late Phil Rogers. Who also did a sideline in selling 'Shoji Hamada' pots.

Now here is a site you can browse on Leach school pottery for ages. Goldmark have been a terrific Ceramics gallery for many years. Phil Rogers used to be their expert. They had fabulous shows by most of the Leach potters over 2 decades or more. Prices are Jaw Dropping!

Re: Slab press moulded Japanese Style Bottle
Philpot, I recently acquired the following books: LEACH, BERNARD (St Ives Artists) by Edmund De Waal.& THE LEACH LEAGACY by Marion Whybrow.
The latter, with a large directory of over 60 potters associated with Leach. Most of whom I've not heard of, or have, but didn't appreciate the connection. (also contains many of their personal marks.)
Anyway, in the back is a full directory of all known apprentices and students from St. IVES. at least until 1960.
I'm beginning to get a picture of how wide the leach influence extends,
And the ambigoius or grey areas in attribution.
Just this most fundemntal basic information and understanding has completely changed how I see the whole picture.
Think it's time for me to relax on the whole subject now and allow the story to unfold itself as I go along.

Re: Slab press moulded Japanese Style Bottle
The term 'Leach school' applies to not only the leach apprentices. But to a much wider group of potters. The boom in British studio pottery came in the 60's and 70's as part of that post-war explosion of Arts and Culture in the UK, Fed by the Baby Boomer generation.
Alternative life styles were seen as a part of that. Hand pottery making making became cool and popular. Bernard Leach had a huge influence over many many potters from that generation.
I see you live in London Bernardo. Have you been to the V&A and browsed its vast studio pottery collection. It is all hidden away upon the 5th floor, Fantastic place to go. Or have you had a look at the Contemporary Ceramics shop run by the Craft Potters association, which is right opposite the British museum?
This is just the Bernard Leach pieces at the V&A,
