Re: Decorative tile / plaque “G LINTOTT or GLINTOTT” 1932…
Apologies. Spellcheck interfered with my post!
The signature on the back of the tile/plaque appears to read either G. LINTOFF or G. LINTOTT and is dated 1932.
Thanks

Thanks Naomi as always for your help. Interesting as the style of the makers impression and date along with the quality of the relief modelling made me think that this piece was made by pro potter.
More research to be down….
Thanks again

Unusual piece. Seems to represent an African boy.

Yes, I’ve not seen a similar piece. This adds to my curiosity regarding maker and where it was made in 1932!

I haven't been able to find any reference to anyone working in British Art Potteries with that surname ( I think it is most likely Lintott). However, the surname appears to originate from Shropshire but perhaps with that subject the maker might have emigrated to South Africa, perhaps?

Will also look into the clothing of figure as a possible clue!

I wonder if it is a stylised female figure carrying a water pot on her head? The bangles on the forearm would indicate that, and it was always the females who did the drudgery work of carrying the water from the river or spring.
Moreover its is a very statuesque figure. The Maasai tribe in Africa have an average height of over 6 ft. I wonder if is more of a figure from the Kenya, Zambia sort of area? Parts of which used to be known as Rhodesia in colonial days.

Dear Philpot.
Thanks for your post. Always greatly appreciated! Your points are fascinating ones. Will endeavour to widen my net of research to take in the regions you mention.
Have to reiterate that this piece is very well executed modelling and as such feels like it’s been made by a talented ceramicist. Signature also feels quite professional and has an elegance to it.
Taking all these hypotheticals into consideration I’m hoping we unearth more about this person but remain realistic that this might not be viable.
Thanks again for all your assistance.
Kindest
