Hi

I like this little fellow but just can not make out the half circle written mark, the symbol or the typescript writting underneath.

Milton Head Pottery, Brixham

https://torquaypottery.info/about/potteries-in-torquay-area/milton-head-pottery

MILTON HEAD POTTERY
Milton Head Pottery Co. Ltd.  1950-1959  – The Old Pound House, Milton Street, Brixham.

The pottery was originally a farmhouse with the Milton Head Pottery building being one of the outbuildings. This pottery was started by 3 partners in 1950. They were Peter Draper the artist and designer, better known later for his writing for TV and films. Sidney Higgins whose family owned brickfields was responsible for the pottery kiln firing and Frank Middlebrook an ex-serviceman and the pottery thrower.

Initially the pottery made was all hand thrown and slip decorated, but later some was jollied or slip cast after the manager Patrick Stroud had mastered mould making, but the pottery so made remained slip decorated. A strong selling line at that time was in drinking mugs and tankards or steins as they called them. Mike Skipwith gained experience at the Milton Head Pottery after leaving University. It was at Milton Head that he learnt the wax resist technique that became much used at his Lotus Pottery.

There was in Brixham a shop of contemporary design called Oasis at 15 King Street, that sold ceramics made in association with the Milton Head pottery.

The Milton Head Pottery was sold to George Jackram the owner of a nearby business about 1959 and he renamed it The Brixham Pottery and produced pottery on the same site.

Milton Head used two different marks and for more information on the many other Devon and West Country pottery marks see details of the Torquay Pottery Mark Book on our Books page.

Hi,

Can anybody identify this fish dish. It has a TS. and MP. mark. I have seen the TS mark under another topic, but hasn't been attributed. Perhaps the MP. Mark may help in identification. Possibly the pottery studio name.

Kind regards Pugmill

I’ve seen a few of these but still a mystery. There might be a link with Brixham Pottery

Another one here, this time with an RT monogram. I’m assuming MP is the Pottery.
And one with a GT monogram.

The top dish is very Similar to some Tremaen, however the marine theme is very like
many Isle of Wight pieces. This one is marked in a similar way.

If the attribution is correct (I can’t find a photo of the base) then there was a Brixham Pottery dish (black one at the bottom) with very similar designs to one of the mystery dishes, so I suspect it’s someone who trained there before setting up their own studio - Edited to add, it was the other way round: Milton Head Pottery was set up first and became Brixham Pottery, hence the similarities in the designs

And Brixham had a similar way of writing on the base. I don’t have a history of the pottery to check the names of those who worked there against the monograms on the mystery pottery

The shape of those dishes are very similar to the one I posted, so I think we may be getting somewhere. Brixham pottery was originally called Milton Head pottery, so could that be the MP. Mark. Could the TG. mark be a poorly written TS. Also, Arran Pottery, used a similar way of marking their work.

Actually the mark could be MHP. For Milton Head Pottery, which would make it pre 1959. There is a Toni and Raymond Smith mentioned on the Totquay Pottery Collectors Society web site. TR. And TS. maybe.

Definitely by Milton Head Pottery. There’s a Facebook page curated by the daughter of one of the managers (possibly the late Patrick Stroud) and two trays are on the page with the same shape, and one has the onion design above
