Dear all,

Attached please find pictures of a small lidded stoneware studio pot with a makers mark impressed at the bottom edge which I would appreciate your help in IDing. Looks to me like an "M". Nicely formed and glazed

I know there may be a few potential candidates, but hoping that a look at the piece will help narrow down the possible field.

Glazed in a khaki brown to the outside edge of the bottom of the pot along with the inner. Glazing continues on the outside of the lid and within the rim internally.

Approx dimensions

Height - 5cm
Diameter - 11cm

Thanks in advance as always!

It looks like an M as you say. So it is very probably an early Mary Rich piece. She is more famed for her highly decorated bowls and vases. The other candidate would have been Micki Scholoessingk but she does entirely wood firing which results from different glaze effects that this one has. Nice piece, but nothing to write home about.

Hi Philpot,

Thanks for your help. Was thinking Mary Rich (early). Don't know the work of Margaret "Marg" Hall but someone just mentioned her to me?

A functional piece...

Thanks again!

I have one too. It's not Mary Rich. Marg Hall is possible, but the middle line of the M is a bit longer than her mark and she doesn't have an O around it.

A Couple more examples of this mystery mark

Wow thanks Naomi for recalling my enquiry.

It does look feasible that this is by Owen Watson. A new potter to me!

Thanks again

He was British but moved to France to pot. Robert Goldsmith mentions him on his website. He went out there while training because Owen had been a patient of his grandmother's. He said it was a very basic lifestyle. Woodfiring, with homemade ash glazes; apparently Owen's lavender wood glaze was particularly nice. He died in 2014
