Hi, thanks for replying. That was my initial thought but there is no handle to lift off and couldn't find anything similar on the web.

Hi….it’s a small flower wall pocket….the notch on the back is for it to hang or you could string it to hang and the small oblong gap is for a small posy or similar although I doubt they were used for flowers very often….1970s I think….

I found one described as a string holder, but it looks more like a slot for scissors.

Thought the same, is there a little hole at the bottom for string? can't see from the photos.
