Qianlong sauce boat? or other?
I rescued this old sauce boat from the council tip. It's in poor condition with lots of chips and a badly repaired handle but there is something charming about it with the rocky landscape design, houses on stilts over the water, boats, a couple of people talking, a flock of birds, shaped trees, etc. There are no marks on the base.
I would really appreciate your help in attributing this to a period, style, pottery etc.
Was it worth saving from the tip?

Very nice. Please add a photo of the base to check clay and construction

Cheers :)
I could well be wrong, but I think with the glazed base and the moulded sides it's 19thC rather than 18thC. The shape might be based on earlier silver jugs/sauce boats

Thank you NaomiM. I am very grateful. So, strictly speaking I should describe it as Qing Dynasty and not Quinlong period to cover the broader time scale. This is the first piece of Oriental pottery I have ever bought and it has spawned an interest that might even lead to a new collection! I have so much to learn. If there is anything else you can tell me about the sauce boat I will be greatly indebted to you.

Qing would be a better description. It's beautifully handpainted. There is a group of Chinese pots made for the Malacca market in the late 18th-early 20thC called 'kitchen Qing' which is worth checking out. This piece looks too finely painted to fit that group. And the Japanese copied Chinese wares, which also confuses things

I thinking it's English going by the shape and foot base, Liverpool or Lowestoft. A lot of it was unmarked 1780's early 1800's.

Don't think it's Lowestoft, most of their small sauce boats similar to this.
had the little point on top of the handle.
Found the borders are usually a better guide than the design itself, Lowestoft often has
XXXXX as a border, This has a greek-key type border which will be distinctive.

I think the colour of the white ground has too much of a blue tint for it to be English.

This is so intriguing. I am learning such a lot from you all. Thank you. I have taken every bit of advice and spent hours researching on the internet but I still can't pin it down to one particular pottery, country or period. However, after comparing sauce boat shapes and particularly the very simple handle, I have come to the conclusion it's not Lowestoft, Liverpool or Bow. I have yet to research the Japanese copies of Chinese pottery. The inside border pattern is unusual too. I haven't found another wave-like pattern. The Greek key pattern on the outside does feature in quite a lot of Chinese pottery.

The Gotheborg website of Chinese and Japanese ceramics is worth checking out
