Church or house stamp - Pat Maw and Sue Thorley, Dunchurch Pottery Empty Dunchurch Pottery, Church Mark

Post by Howard Lincoln September 16th 2015, 4:16 pm

I bought a lot of stone- and earthenware storage jars at a local auction recently and found a few stamped pieces in amongst the sugar and tea jars. After researching for about an hour on the basis of one piece I realised I'd overlooked a sticker on the bottom of another with the name address and telephone number of the pottery (doh!). The pottery is Dunchurch pottery (near Rugby) which is a place I often visit. I can find no information on it at all and wondered if anyone had come across the pottery? Pottery mark can be seen on picture 2 btw.

I've come across pieces before, but know nothing about the Pottery itself other than it was operating in the 70s.

It doesnt seem very exciting but the local link got me curious. The Dun Cow pub in the village is much more interesting ;-)

Can’t find this house/castle stamp in the book - can anyone recognise it? It’s a fairly large functional oven/serving dish.

That’s great, thank you.

@denbydump I had thought of Jan Bunyan but the castle wasn’t quite the same, and I could only find it with the Warwick stamp.

I’ll see if I can find out any more about Dunchurch Pottery it’s fairly local to me.

The Friends of Dunchurch society have apparently just been given some old photographs of the village in the 1960s/70s including one of the potter at work, they are going to get them scanned in and forward to me. I’ll update the Dunchurch pottery thread when I have more information.

The potters at Dunchurch pottery in the 1970s were Pat Maw and Sue Thorley - from a local newspaper article about the queens silver jubilee, 1977.

Can’t find anything else about them unfortunately.
