Picked three of these up today with MW marks, I seen this mark often on reference sites but can't remember by who
. I don't think they are by William Marshall?

Another one here, with a note that it might be by Margaret West, Castle Hedingham but I’ll have to check on that

These ubiquitous "cups" seem to have been made by many potteries, in an almost
identical manner, rough unglazed outer, with usually a celadon glazed inner.
I'm sure I have examples by at least Winchcombe, St Ives and Muchelney.
What were they exactly? were they part of a set? impractical to use I would think.

Are they big enough for soup?

I have some larger examples, with longer handles, some lidded, which I'm sure were
for soup, and possibly came as a set with a Tureen, but some, like I suspect this one,
are tiny. Never been sure of their exact purpose. Egg poacher maybe?

To deep for egg poachers and would say for soup and these are quite large.

The smaller ones were traditionally described as "egg bakers" and then became ramekins. The larger ones are handled soup bowls.

I met the Sikh potter, Mansimran Singh, many years ago at Art in Clay. He had been an apprentice at the Leach Pottery around 1959/60 and he told me that throwing egg bakers was the first job that he was given to help build up his throw skills. He remembers throwing them over and over again all day long, only for Bernard to come along at the end of the day and throw them all in the bin.
