I am trying to figure out who made this and when?

also be good to know how to refer to this type vessel? a jug? an amphora? a ????

believe this is maiolica piece

do people think it might be missing a stopper?

I saw a similar one recently. Possibly a Pilgrim Flask, although it has a base, where as pilgrim flasks are designed to be hung over the shoulder by a loop of string. Possibly a moon flask or amphora.
The written mark could date it to the early 20thC, but based on a traditional/earlier style.

fascinating how much work went into each piece

"flask" was the exact term I was looking for and greatly improved my searches

it seems this is a more modern interpretation of symbols from maybe the 14th or 15th century
