Add in Buyer's commission and Vat on that, its near £250,000. It was a big outlier on this auction though. It was rather a subdued sale, which probably reflects the Times

Re: MAGDALENE ODUNDO SELLS HAMMER PRICE £200,000.
You forgot that the buyer would have to pay ARR too, which is another £8000 and so the total was £256,000. A few years ago Magdalene came to visit me, as the UCA Farnham, wanted to loan a piece by Ladi Kwali for an exhibition they were holding. At the time the most expensive piece of her work that had sold in auction was around £86,000 and we talked about the fact that, as in had sold in the States, she didn't get her little cut of the deal.
She is an extremely likeable lady and so I am glad that this time she will be getting a little something.

There was a touring exhibition of hers in 1987 entitled 'New Works'. The cost of the pieces from this exhibition was £1600 to £1800. A fairly substantial price for work even then.
