A rare  Avoncroft Price list/catalogue from his years at Droitwich, 1955-72. Very much a working pottery.

An example of his AP stamp

https://pin.it/Aa1JnH7

I haven't come across any verified examples of his cross mark, which he supposedly used while at St Augustine's Pottery, Canterbury in Kent, 1972-88 (although I do have a few unverified examples via ebay).
Nor have I seen the HS mark which he used 1950-52 while teaching at Stoke House in Bucks.

The photo of the marks comes from the catalogue of the Aberystwyth Arts Centre exhibition catalogue in 1990 Naomi. The family has a large input into the exhibition, so these must be the definitive marks. Given that a lot of his output using those marks was probably ordinary domestic ware in everyday use, probably few of those items have survived.

To be fair, it's a pottery's ordinary domestic ware that we see a lot of. Maybe it was only on pottery made for Kings School in the remains of the Abbey, or for Church use?

Hi all, am I correct in thinking that this large bowl I have is a piece by Geoffrey Whiting during his St Augustine period in Canterbury?

It has a single mark that I believe is an Avoncroft 'A' with a St Augustine 's' below it where the dot is usually found.

I'd like to be sure what I have so that I don't misrepresent it.

It measures 10.8 inches in width and 5.3 inches in height.

What you have is a bowl with the Avoncroft pottery mark alone. This was a mark that Geoffrey Whiting used for over 25 years in his pottery in Worcestershire. The St Augustine's Kent pottery mark was generally a Cross. Occasionally the St Augustine's mark was also used with the Avoncroft one.
But it is a pottery mark. Geoffrey Whiting had apprentices and pupils at Avoncroft pottery, and generally this was the mark used by them. You can only be definite that it is by Geoffrey Whiting if he also used his personal mark.
David Leach would use an L+ mark for the items that were made by apprentices at Lowerdown Pottery. His own work always had his personal mark.
Collectors prefer work with the personal mark. Items with the Pottery mark alone are less desirable, which is reflected in the demand for them.

The usual Avoncroft Pottery mark is an A with a dot. I wonder if he’s adapted the mark by adding an S in place of a dot for St Augustine. I dont know why he would have used As for Avoncroft

Looking through the thread, there is this coffee set where the coffee pot has the As stamp while the sugar bowl has the St Augustine Pottery cross mark

Thanks NaomiM, I agree this is very likely a piece by Whiting when he was working at his St Augustine studio in Canterbury, and I don't believe it was intended to identify it as an apprentice piece as philpot suggests. The reason I think this is because I've yet to find a St Augustine cross stamp, or an 'A + s' stamp used alongside his GW seal, so it appears he no longer used this GW personal seal mark on St Augustine period pieces.

The fact that I purchased this bowl in person from a seller in Canterbury adds credence to this being his Geoffrey Whiting St Augustine pottery stamp.

I wonder why this 'A + s' stamp isn't included in his official list of documented marks?

No lists are complete, and sometimes the Marks are drawn wrongly
