Re: Rye Pottery and other Potteries of Rye
Came across this piece, which also has a black ink stamp rather than a hand written mark. That was a commission for Bayer, so it's possible this was also a commission.

This one is the same as yours so definitely seems legit.

For further information, such as a date for the gorilla, it's worth contacting the pottery which is still in operation

Tiny tin glazed vase
Could it be one of the Rye Potteries?

Re: Rye Pottery and other Potteries of Rye
The shape looks similar to one of the miniature vases on the front of Harry Lyon's New Century exhibition "Rye Pottery in the Fifties" catalogue. The exhibition was held during April 1996. I know many of them weren't marked because the seal wouldn't fit on the base.
So I agree with DD - Rye Pottery late 1940s and likely to have been thrown by Edwin Twort.
Twort had worked at the Belle Vue Pottery that had been on the site of the Rye Pottery and had closed in 1939. He had a bit of experience having started working at Belle Vue when he was 12 and been there 63 years.

Re: Rye Pottery and other Potteries of Rye
It is impossible to be 100% certain of course, as I wasn't around back then.
The advantage back in 1996 was that Wally Cole was still alive and was able to attribute unmarked items. I remember going to the PV and later meeting him in Rye and, although quite frail by then, he was still very good at providing information and remembering the past.

Re: Rye Pottery and other Potteries of Rye
A large salt pig. I've seen coffee sets in the brown version of this design. Am I right in thinking it's 1960s? Any other info would be good, if possible.
Thanks in advance

Re: Rye Pottery and other Potteries of Rye
It's later than that as this type of mark wasn't used until the 1970s according to Carol Cashmore in her book The Potteries of Rye. It looks similar to the mark she shows for 1974-1980, although not quite the same. However, that date fits with the time when salt pigs were at the height of their popularity.

I always check the Completed listings on eBay to estimate rarity and value

Re: Rye Pottery and other Potteries of Rye
N is right, it only goes back 3 months but the sold listing is vey helpful - order highest to low. Compare against the current listed items. To get a good understanding you may have to watch it over a period of time.
Miniature Rye x4. Strangely the one on the left has calcium carbonate deposits all round the top as if it had been left upside down in water for years. All happily dissolved away. No damage. Centre two marked inscribed 'Rye' by hand.
So cute (not cheap :[ )

Re: Rye Pottery and other Potteries of Rye
I will post one of my favorite jokes here - you can delete if it's out of place.
Wogan (BBC1 from 1982 until 1992) had Rick Wakeman on as a guest and he slipped into the cover station whilst telling a story that he was in the curry house and blah blah ordered a Chicken Tarka and ...blah blah ....Wogan stops him and says... 'whats a chicken Tarka?'..... 'It's like a Chhicken Tika but 'Otter' comes back Wakeman.
So no one under 45 will get that joke.
