Hi I inherited some studio pottery from my father. I have tracked down some of the marks but some elude me.
I have two really nice pieces that i like with just a capital B in a square box impressed to the base.
I hope the pics i upload do so.
Any help appreciated

I think it's a B sitting on an L. Can't see it in the book.

I think its Paul Barron. He has a B mark where the bottom B is slightly more bulbous than the top one, as in this mark
Paul Barron(1917-83) was a pottery lecturer for many years at Farnham Art College, where The more well known Henry Hammond was the principal of the department. He also shared a pottery at Oast Pottery Bentley Hampshire with Henry Hammond for many years.
This pot is very much in the Leach/Cardew Anglo Oriental style of pottery. While Paul Barron did not actually work at the Leach pottery St Ives, there was a lot of cross fertilisation of ideas. Henry Hammond and Paul Barron were friendly with Bernard Leach, and visited St Ives quite often.

Thank you guys for your info more than i could find. The pots are really good quality and the feel and style of decoration reminded me of the leach connection. Can see the influence. will check out Paul baron he sounds a very interesting potter.
thanks again

I don't think they are by Paul Barron but I don't have an alternative suggestion. The mark just doesn't look right.

Can you send photos of marks from some of the other pieces in order to see if they differ?

Thank you for your reply. I only have these two pots with this mark both are exactly the same mark. Other pots i got i have mainly been able to identify them. Still a few to go yet though.
My father liked collecting studio pottery and usually only bought what he felt were good quality so i am hopeful these are too but maybe not .

Maybe Branscombe Pottery mark. Although it might be a BL rather than just a B

BL marks in the Marks book include Leo Bonassera, Kathleen Barbara Donohoe, Barrie Linfoot and Laszlo Bruckner

Hi Naomi
Thank you for your advice i will check them out today. I have looked closely at the marks and it does look like a BL together. will work on that i think going forward. Did not anticipate this being so tricky. I am sure we will find the solution as they are quality pots

I know its not but the "L" and "B" plus the two raised dots in the B look like Bernard leachs mark all put into one impression. The style of the pottery looks like some Cornish pottery i see about online. .
Please realise I am a complete novice at this but the search leads you down so many dead ends then hope then realisation I was wrong.
Where's Sherlock Holmes when you need him.
Good fun though

Potters do change their marks and not all of them are recorded. Plus there were many potters in the 60s and 70s who were never recorded; we just have to wait for one of their pots to turn up with a label.
