A most unusual stoneware cylinder vase 8in high.
It almost looks unfinished.
The clay is quite a rough stoneware, similar to Denby.

The only stoneware I've seen is the ashtrays. Must be another one of those "why don't I make some..." that pop up every now and then. It will be 60s. Unusual, interesting.

distinctive if a little strange vase - Briglin

Post by olipayton on March 12th 2018, 6:59 pm

Hi guys and gurls! I like the more strange items in life so this one caught my eye. Its been part glazed and then has had some flower petals cut into the unglazed part of the vase I think!
I can see no obvious mark but as its such a distinctive style I wonder if it can be recognized.

They had a big order for EIIR coronation ashtrays an went with a slip mould to make the large run. Seems that afterwards ever the spendthrift they kept using the moulds and produced a range of animal ashtrays, so it's early-mid 50s -

Is it bigger than the little ashtrays?

Maybe espresso saucer sized. It was over priced so I left it, but it didnít strike me as slipcast. Their usual wheelthrown brown clay.

Oh nice find DD. They are sixties very well made kitchen jars. Made by the senior potters not the apprentices so quality is very high. They come in this small size (spice) and much bigger (pint size). Really an exercise in texture and pattern never seen two the same, always black white and very tactile in the hand. Alan Pett sent me a nice photo - he has a better collection than me.

So not seen any of these for a lloooooonnng time. Just not out there so you could call these uncommon. On white clay, they are part of the eclectic early production before they settled on the wax resist/sgraffito combination on red earthenware technique.
