This is a real puzzle for me.

Highly patterned in a vaguely similar way to Bitossi (but, yes, I know it is not).

Although the vase shows signs of having been hand thrown, the pattern seems to have been applied as though in a mould.

Unfortunately, it is not marked, but I am feeling that the pattern might point to a particular style - ie country. The pattern is an odd one!

I am wondering if it is English? ... Or European? So I thought I would try you good people first.

I bought in in France. Height 8 inches Diameter 8 inches.

Thanks for all your help.

I think it might actually be Japanese. Here’s an example of something similar https://www.auctionzip.com/auction-lot/Japanese-Basket-Weave-Porcelain-Vase_B1642DE903. There’s a style of ancient Japanese pottery called Jomon where rope was used to make impressed patterns in the clay and later on patterns were made using bamboo or rattan (like the example in the link). I could be very wrong here but I don’t think it’d hurt to do some research in that direction, maybe even look at Thailand and Vietnam as well. They also have traditions in intricate basketry and pottery. Good luck!

Sorry but I’m not seeing any similarities between the two. Wrong base for oriental pottery, imo. They usually turn their pottery to reduce the thickness of the walls, leaving a smooth surface on the base.

Interesting observation NaomiM. Could the base be more French do you think? How about Eastern Europe like Hungary?

(I've sorted my computer problem - the one I emailed you just now ... all fixed, thanks)

The brown glaze, especially on the inside, points more towards East Germany and Eastern Europe imo.
