I am not sure if this is the right place to ask for help identifying what I think is a marked studio pottery Japanese Tokkuri.

It stands 11cm/just over 4" high with the widest diameter being 9cm/3.5". It is clearly marked. I am not sure what it is made of - it reminds me of what I think is called T material or grogged clay.

I bought it in France, near Cognac but I do not think that is relevant.

Can anyone give me any ideas as to what it is, what it is made of, and who does the mark belong to?

Thanks

Certainly looks Japanese. Fired on its side, or made to look like it has. These days young potters use electric kilns and sprayed on glaze to imitate wood firing. I’ve moved it to ID My Pottery otherwise members will assume its already been identified

It is Japanese and a sake bottle but I agree with what Naomi has suggested about it not being wood-fired. The glaze on the foot also suggests to me that it is not a studio piece but could well have been factory made.

The type of decoration with a circle of unglazed clay is known as botamochi and is typical of Bizen stoneware. However, this is not Bizen as the stoneware body is the wrong colour.
