For some reason the first country that popped into my brain was Italy - I seem to have in the very dark recesses of my mind, remembering seeing something like this with a similar glaze

Yes, me too, and some Italian pieces do have that "crayon" like marking.

Yes, italy was my first thought too but I was expecting an Italy stamp. But if it was originally bought in Italy it wouldn’t have one
