Well in my opinion Phil is right about the privacy thing, given Maltby seems to have taken steps to remain "off the grid", however he is wrong about it not being a Maltby
Nothing wrong with asking someone who knows him though, as it is their call on if they think he would or would not want to be asked.
Mick Cartwright has his contact info in the public domain, so I thought he would be ok to ask, turns out he was very helpful, even if we don't have a firm ID.

Potters of the older generation may be ‘off grid’ in that they are not internet competent but that doesn’t mean they don’t want to be asked. I’ve written to a few potters in their 80s asking for information, and included a SAE for their reply. That generation appreciate the old fashioned touch.

I'm talking of Maltby in particular and the things I have been told/read about him, never met him myself, so could be wrong, still no harming in asking your friend.
