Poole Delphis Cat decorators mark ID

Post by bluenote on March 19th 2018, 7:09 pm

I've been on the prowl for a while looking for a full size Delphis cat and finally captured one alive, but can anyone id the decorators mark please and advise which years they were in production between? From Robs Poole Pottery site the closest id would seem to be an early Carole Holden mark but not quite. I appeciate there will always be variation in hand applied marks but can anyone confirm if its her mark please? Thanks

Yes. I've had similar problems with some of the Doulton decorators marks too. Close, but not quite. I guess we can all go into shorthand if rushing onto the next thing on the agenda, and given examples in books or on the net don't quite match.

Maybe not if she was HoD. She must have decorated some pots though if there are examples of her mark. Do you know if she was appointed HoD from the outset or if she rose up the ranks to the position? The Poole site gives her early and later marks but I don't think she was there for very long

As I thought, this is not a Delphis Cat, don't think they ever made them.
It is a more modern "living glaze" kitty, still in production I think,
so the monogram should be fairly easy to ID.

I've not found anything on the Poole website thats advertising them as still in production or for sale. Perhaps they were part of the Volcano glaze/ colourway range

Looks like they are "VOGUE" cats.

That auction listing is wrong, Vogue is a dark almost black colour, see here for example:
http://www.taguk.plus.com/towngate/satin_silk.htm
These ones are Odyssey pattern (1999 - 2005).
Paintress mark looks most like Carol Bolton but hard to be sure.

Great . Thanks for this. I was going to contact Poole direct to enquire but you've saved me the job. They've ovbiously done the cats in different ranges if the Vogue ones exist too. I guess they are popularly known as delphis cats as the colours and living glaze technique do bear some resemblance to the original delphis look. Is there an up to date list of decorators marks you can point me to please as I've only come across the one on Robs Poole site which is great for past decorators marks.

Re: Poole Delphis Cat decorators mark ID

I have an original 'Giftware' price list from 1999 which lists the large cats as 30 in 'Red Delphis' or 25 in 'Velta/Lustre'. I think the red delphis must be a more orangey shade than the odyssey red, and was also used on ducks ( red delphis duck is 20 ). My guess is that once they phased out the std blue/green glazed cats they offered the different glazes at a premium price. Probably only lasted until first time they went into administration in early 2001.

They may have become known as Delphis cats because when they were first produced in Living Glaze in 1999 the first colourway was called "Red Delphis" (confusing I know). The same figures had been produced in the Dolphin Blue glaze since at least 1989. The Vogue cats were introduced in 2001. I am not absolutely sure when Odyssey was first used on cats, although the pattern itself dates from 1999. It is very similar to the Red Delphis (just extra yellow) so it is possible it replaced it, maybe also in 2001. The last time I can see cats in the catalogue is 2005.

There is no other free to view online source of decorators marks. The Collectors Club has identification galleries but is paid for membership. The best reference book is Hayward and Atterbury's "Poole Pottery". Sales catalogues from this later period also often have decorators marks in them.

Now thats what you call a real pooleing of information and expertise. Thank you to everyone who's contributed. I have seem a few if these in the online saleroom and ebay, seeming to sell for silly prices, so if Waldorf was 30 when first made he's been a good buy.....just need to find a mate to keep him company now. Thanks again all
