ID oriental mark - Japanese eggshell Kutani teapot

Post by eggiacalus on February 18th 2018, 11:48 pm

Hello,
I've an antique teapot,
I'd like to identify the mark under the base,
so to be able to date it.
Thanks for your time

Mark looks like a shorthand signature. We might be able to narrow it down to a prefecture if you post photos of the pot itself but I doubt we’ll identify the potter

Worth trying this website for Oriental marks -
gotheborg.com

As a general rule with oriental pottery, the mark is less likely to be a indicator of the age of a piece than with pottery from elsewhere in the world.

I think it's Japanese and made for the export market - it looks late 1920s into the 1930s to me from the style, although I am no expert on Oriental export wares.

I’m afraid most of our members, me included, won’t click on external photo hosting sites due to unsavoury and pornographic adverts hosted on them, so you may not get many replies.

I wondered if it’s eggshell porcelain but it doesn’t look that thin in the photos

Found similar ones, including the same shaped lid, by searching google images with Japanese eggshell porcelain cranes

Forgive my ignorance about porcelain ... What does eggshell porcelain mean? Which date are you thinking of?

Many thanks

Eggshell porcelain was popular in the first half of the 20thC so it’s likely to date from the Art Deco period. It was a very thin - eggshell thin - porcelain. Sometimes with a lithophane image of a geisha girl in the base, which could be seen when held up to the light. Often the pieces were parcelled out around the communities to be decorated at home (‘geisha ware’ was another popular eggshell porcelain style, where transfer printed geishas and town and country scenes were coloured in) and the decorators were paid per piece and just left a small mark on the base to show it was one of theirs

A bit later than Meiji, imo. Into the Taishō period or what ever the equivalent is in in the West.

I got a doubt...
It's Satsuma Taishō or Kutani Taishō?

Thanks

Kutani, because it’s porcelain.
Satsuma wares are all earthenware, and the glaze forms a fine network of cracks called crazing.
