Can anyone identify or date these studio/art pottery pieces please

Post by bluenote on November 11th 2017, 3:58 pm

Both came from the same source and although they could be amateur pieces I wondered if anyone recognised the style? Red earthen ware fired to a higher than normal temperature giving a darker brown colour to the body. I think its a salt glaze on them as crystals are still apparent in places. The colours are suggestive of 17/18th century but I've not seen either the green on the bowl or turquoise on the bottle on early pieces- is anyone else aware of such colours on early pieces - if not then they probably are 19/20th century. There is wear on the glaze on the base which gives them some age. The bowl has thumb pushed dimples all round and the bottle possibly an extruded handle with a sweet little button detail to finish it off. Has anyone come across this before, as I felt it was probably more of a professional finish, but both are quite crude or naive pieces. Any thoughts and suggestions welcome. Thanks  " />

IMHO I would say they look more country or art pottery than studio.

Yes I agree they are probably more art than studio. Whoever made them clearly wasn't too bothered about finish as both still carry the wire marks they were whipped off the wheel with. Thanks

Belgian art pottery is usually quite heavy, and thickly potted.

Those colours look a bit odd for begian especially the bright blue and yellow.

Reminds me of the base of a very Edwin Jenkins early pit fired 1900's Ewenny piece in my collection - Think their colour scheme is not too far off on some examples - anyway hope it helps...

I'm not sure. I find early Ewenny tends to chip easily.

Yes I can see where you are coming from thanks. Have checked out other Ewenny on ebay and can see some similarities and agree they are probably from a pottery of a similar ilk as they aren't signed like yours. The rough finish to the base with glaze runs seems to be quite common amongst the myriad of small 19/20th century potteries
