I guess its to identify what appears to be strips of pewter applied to the
sides of the vase. Must be French. The pewter will probably have been
bought in, from that maker, on the disk, which may be obscuring the
glass maker's mark underneath, if there is one.

You might see something looking down inside to the base from the top.

Thanks denbydump I will take a closer look to see If I can find the glass maker mark by lookinking down at the inside of the vase.
