Woodfired Japanese vase - Shigaraki or Iga ware
Unmarked woodfired vase with lugs for a bamboo handle, and natural ash glaze. Seems to be Japanese, handbuilt (by coiling) rather than wherlturned, in the Shigaraki or Iga ware style (or Shigaraki, although that has a sandy clay).

The only thing that I can add to that is that it might not have been made in Japan, although the style fits what you say.
It's going to need someone to have something similar from a known source to get much further, I imagine.

It's a bit of a dirty firing, and there's no mark, both of which might point to it being a vintage piece.
