Funny little jug withXX incise mark
Hi, I don't think there is much age to this but it looks like it is copying something much older. Would be interested to know if anyone has any clues as to who made it.

My guess would be northern European probably from the low countries. The colour is typical of what has been made in local potteries for a very long time including the ones in England but the clay has a French/Normandy feel to me. The subject is an imp/devil and I have seen his face a lot on various items. The Victorians onwards loved these face jug/vases.

I have one too. It's a copy of the Medieval one in the British Museum. Trinity Court Potteries make them amongst others.

The original is Kingston ware, face jug. c.1300
