Jesus.... that ebay AW £500
Must be the start of silly season up to Christmas. Saw the green kitty treble it's price at the end, should have paid more attention more the first time.
Then I bid 330 on the AW as it's similar to my dinosaur egg. Jesus it went for over 500
*gulp*

I thought the Kitty would do well, and that is a nice bit of Wallwork.

The colouring on Alan's piece is very good and unusual, so I don't think the price was surprising. I wouldn't expect a more typical glazed one of that size and shape to make that kind of money.

Interesting tho. Collectors who would not buy studio pottery normally just tip-toe around the Rie/Coper area looking for 'Investment' pieces. Hence the increase in prices for Rie/ Coper recently. But they seem to be looking slightly furrher around the field for further opportunities. ,John Ward has increased sharply in price, ditto Emmanuel Cooper. Is it now going to be Alan Wallwork's turn? Or would you not really call him a potter that really chimes with the current urban/Modernist/ Minimalist (or whatever you call it) trend?

Alan's selling prices started much lower than the other potters you've mentioned and have been much higher in relative terms for years. I remember back in the days when London auction houses featured studio pottery, 10 or so years ago, pieces of his work having hammer prices around £1000.

We have a similar piece, same size which was bought from his studio in Lyme Regis in the mid 1990's, probably around £20. It was 12-15yrs later that we found out who AW was and that his stuff was collectable. I've always assumed that the current price was around £50 - £75. Not looking to sell it but I'd be well chuffed to get £500.

As I said the colour of the piece on Ebay looked especially good but a piece that size should fetch at least half that if not a little more but the price you paid back then would have probably been about right.
He never had any solo exhibitions until I pestered him to have one with me in 1999 and then continued to have them for the next ten years. It wasn't that he hadn't been asked it was that he didn't like having lots of pots waiting for an exhibition and not making him cash.
Over the series of exhibition I held it was noticeable how interest grew and people started coming from all over the country to buy pots, often putting them on Ebay shortly afterwards and making a profit. His last exhibition with me in Greenwich, which was also my last exhibition there, was my only exhibition that completely sold out (I think I only had 2 left after the Private View for the rest of the month).

AW prices have gone mad in recent years, six years ago I could still buy a nice pierced piece for £30.00

That price probably was an outlier tho. Roseberys South London had some Wallwork lots with two of the smaller cleft vases in each lot,at £120-£180 guide price. Several of the lots failed to sell. Cheffins in Cambridge in the Spring had a large vase (circa 50 cms from memory) which went for £300,and a couple of the larger cheese slice thingies with nice glazes which went for under £300 each.
