Without actually holding it, I would guess the material is Onyx.

Agreed. Green onyx. Judging by the colour, from Pakistan, but a sculptor might have shipped a block from there and carved it locally. But since it's unsigned I think the likelihood is it was carved in Asia before being shipped and sold in the US.
