Black vase - stumped
Completely stumped. Not even sure if this is pottery. I thought at first that it was glass.
Light weight. Warm to the touch. Seems to be black glazed porcelain but it's completely opaque, even when a torch is shone against it. Highly reflective surface. Some tiny bumps on the surface. Lacquered, maybe?

Asked a Japanese collector and they said it could be lacquer.
I've never come across glass that was completely opaque to strong light.

I have no experience in lacquer but those scratches on the base are just like scratches in glass

The shape is classic Japanese. To me it looks like glass. It's easy to tell anyway, lacquer is has almost no weight and the scratches on the base indicate something highly resistant to damage. Something lacquer is not. Looks to me like a black molded bit of glass. Could be from anyplace but the Czech's are known for making coloured glass as are the Polish (LSA for example).
