I thought we've had this before but wasn't able to locate anything.

You have probably already ruled this out, but could it be a Stoneshill Pottery mark variation?

I hadn't remembered that John Maltby made salt-glazed pots but the mark doesn't look quite right.
If it was Stonehill then it would be 1960s/early 1970s and to me it doesn't appear that old. I'll try and find some Stonehill Pottery jugs to compare the shape.
Thanks

His SP mark has at least 2 variations from what I've seen, one more angled, one more like yours.
Looks to have some age to me, I'd not be surprised if it were that old anyway.

Several similar Stoneshill pieces on google images at the moment. Some have the more elongated SP mark and others have this mark.

I've not been able to find any jugs but have found some similarities regarding the handle and have seen a similar SP to mine on something else by him.................. so it could well be John's.
Not that anyone wants his domestic ware. It came with 68 others pots I bought yesterday. It could have been 73 but I left the Stonehill coffee pot and mugs to be taken to the charity shop.

Further to this discussion, I came across Spike Pottery in the BSPM book, but it has a dot and is often accompanied by MC mark for Michael Cartwright. But just thought I'd mention it in case anyone else comes across an SP mark

Michael Cartwright had been at the Leach Pottery just before leaving to set up the Spike Pottery and he did produce a range of standard ware there, so I suspect that this didn't have his personal seal as well as SP.
I've not knowingly seen any to confirm this.

Yes, sorry, I didn't read the entry properly. Seems the MC mark was used while he was at Leach, and then SP when he set up his own Spike Pottery

The entry in the BSPM isn't clear and doesn't give the information that at the Spike Pottery in Cambridgeshire he made a range of standard ware plus some individual pieces.
From that I am assuming that the standard ware pieces would be marked SP. and the individual pieces would have MC plus SP. but haven't seen any pots so can't be certain.

I think someone bought it from me for a modest price that thought that it was by John Maltby, even thought I told him that I really didn't know.

a salt glazed jug with the same stamp has just sold on ebay for 20 quid but no closer to cracking the SP code

According to the Marks book the Spike Pottery mark was only used for a short time but seems the closest match. Unfortunately there aren’t many pots by Cartwright online for comparison.

I think whoever made it isn't going to have much bearing on the price.
