Slipware, NP mark - David Wicks, Newark Park Empty Lovely Slipware Jug by David Wicks, Newark Park

Post by r-and-f September 11th 2015, 10:17 am

I had almost given up trying to identify the maker of this lovely 8" slipware jug, one of my favourites.  It has a very clear mark which might be NP or PN, but I've never been able to find out who the potter is.  However I've just spotted a flagon with the same mark (plus another mark) for sale on eBay. The listing suggests a Winchcombe connection.  You can find it if you search on "Unusual Studio Pottery Cider Jar Bottle Flagon Seal Marks Slip Ware Winchcombe". The one on eBay seems to be getting some enthusiastic bids, so I'm hoping that means someone knows the maker.  Can anyone help, please?

I've come across the mark too. The flagon decoration certainly looks like someone apprenticed at Winchcombe

No different style of stamp, unless it's an earlier version .

This is just a guess but might the DW of the flagon be David Wilson, who worked at Winchcombe from 2000 and now has a pottery with his partner called West End Pottery in Somerset (they have a co.uk website).

His current work is in stoneware but N P could be a pottery he worked at before Winchcombe.

An email to him could confirm or rule this out.

Thank you S-P. Looks like Dave Wilson might be a good lead. I'll try to follow it up.

Not the monogram he used at Winchcombe but still worth checking out.

Delighted finally to have a positive ID on this jug! It's by David Wicks, who says:

"Yep, that's a Newark Park wood-fired slipware jug. I made a series based on calligraphy but no particular characters. They probably owe more to JRR Tolkien than anything. Newark Park is a national Trust house in Gloucestershire, near Ozleworth, Wotton-Under-Edge. I ran a pottery in the old laundry in the grounds for five years in the 80s. The kiln was huge and used about a ton of wood a firing, at least it felt like it. It was really too ambitious and I had to give it up. I still make pots at mac, Midlands Arts Centre in Birmingham. That is wood ash dusting onto the shoulder. Sometimes it was a bit too much for this temperature, 1100 degrees Celsius. Best wishes, David Wicks."
