Alexander Lauder (Lauder & Smith) Barnstaple, and Pottington, Devon, (1876-1914).

A small 3-handled cache-pot.

Lauder Barum (Barnstaple) Empty Barum three handled pot - Lauder

Post by lindylou08 October 13th 2015, 6:06 pm

Hi .
I think this what is termed agate ware ??

I can read the second incised word in the mark - Barum - but can anyone decipher the first word/ name. Am I right in thinking this is very early 20th century?      Thanks

This is Alexander Lauder of Barnstaple.

Sorry Lindy, I meant to say Agate ware is made in the clay, rather than the glaze itself.

I just call it drippy art pottery, all lovely stuff!
A nice item, and 100+ years old.

You all beat me to the ID Waaah

Yes I agree.

Alexander Lauder made in Barnstable and marked Barum the Roman word for Barnstable north Devon. Produced in the 1880-1890's. Drip glaze is as good as any way to describe this very traditional type of effect that can be found on loads of items from 18th, 19th century country potteries. A cute thing that can often also be found with the addition of a local town name intended as a keepsake from the seaside Most Excellent

Looks like slipware. Agate ware and marbled clay is where the clay body is a mix of two or more coloured clays, where as this looks like a mix of surface slips on a terracotta or buff coloured body.

No, it's not slipware, just different coloured applied glazes.
Slipware is different coloured applied clay slip.
