Which is fascinating. Would agree with you. Have seen some terrific John Jelfs pieces.BUt in the secondary market his work really struggles.

There is also the point have have noticed where your tastes change. I have so much stuff I can only display a fraction of it, but I always keep new items close for a month or two and strangely often my opinion changes both ways from good to bad and from bad to good. Time does strange things to your perception/opinion. I often buy things to see what the fuss is about then sell them. Wallwork for example - ....keepers! I can't get to auctions to see the stuff so you auction-goers have a big advantage if you get there early and get a chance to handle all the expensive pots.... I can't do that.

That is interesting ! There are always lots of them available on Ebay at any one time, and I must admit to being sorely attempted by them at times. Lovely pieces, but not quite in the style I would really like. Getting fussy!
I wonder if is somebody reselling onwards, or the Ebay person seeking new markets. With estimates of £150-£200, and similar looking pieces cheaper on Ebay, a reseller is probably going to make a loss. Will be interesting to see how they do.

The Martin Bros market has gone very well over the past several years. They are antiques of course, and really do qualify as the first British studio pottery. These were excellent collections, with great provenance and were always going to do well.
The Fort Custard did not sell for numrous reasons. They were over-priced. Even At the bottom end of the estimate they would cost you near £200 or above. Substantially more than an Ebat price. Also selling on Ebay devalues their attraction in some people's eyes (and there have been a Lot on Ebay!). Equally while they are really nice decorative pieces, they are not what the market wants at the moment.
Generally it was a fairly subdued sale. The so called 'booming' studio pottery market of the past few years has cooled somewhat.

I've never heard of 'Fortcustard' I have an image of 'Carry on follow that camel'. What were the W & W lot nos. and I'll have a look. I thought the studio pieces were generally selling well - but what do I know ! For those Poole collectors who wondered why there were unsolds, the G.S. delphis vase has a crack around the base, the one lot of studio plates I viewed there was a rim chip, the large trad jardinere had a feint hairline and the G.S. larger vase had a matchstick head sized chip on the side.

I realise that photos don't always do justice to a piece but lots 393/4/5 seem rather 'old fashioned' in style, not for me but at least I have learnt something today.
