Any point in collecting clear glass decanters?
Picked up a couple of Georgian decanters this week for a tenner thinking they were a bargain, but it turns out that ebay is awash with them, and they're barely making a tenner a piece. Wondering if it's worth giving them shelf space.

i bought some a few years ago and used them for bubble bath in the bathroom - they make a colourful display.
Re: Any point in collecting clear glass decanters?
That's an excellent idea. Thank you.

Its all fashion tho...Who decants wine anymore?
Was at an auction the other day,and Doulton figures were barely making £20...Some that were way over £100 when bought 20 or 30 years ago...
Breaks one's heart.

Last week's Antiques Roadshow there was a gorgeous flower encrusted Minton pot that they only valued at £300.

Studio pottery is very hot ATM. One can find oneself buying a no-body at an inflated price because of it.

Much of the older established pottery is out of fashion , I personally think it was way to high anyway and collectors may have missed the boat so to speak , at some fairs you see the same tired old pieces coming out time after time , to be honest they are boring massed produced victorian tat that had a good innings in the publicity game but have been sussed by the newer generation , imo studio pottery ( proper studio) is the way forward , get the right potter and the skies the limit , studio pottery is on the up and up and is getting more of the recognition in the art scene than it had in the past .

Any brief television exposure will send anything into orbit now, but they haven't
really picked up on studio yet, thank god!

At some point in hoping the media will hype student pottery. Picked up three duff pots in the past week. When will I learn?

Novelty Teapot. Is it porcelain? We get collections like that in the local charity shop about once a month.

I do love a good decanter but they are so common and cheap.
I tell how things are. I went to an auction a month back and was one of about 5 people not staff in the room. They had 3 different internet sites running for bidding. Anything to large to post, glass, silver plated, out of fashion or damaged went for nothing. It was madness. Large groups of Staffordshire figures at £10. Boxes of silver plate £10, dinner sets £10. All of it went straight to Kempton with me the following week and got sold of at £5/£10/£20 an item. People still buy what you would call old fashioned antiques they just don't pay much for them.
Great time to buy the best of that stuff (including decanters). They are too good and too well made to stay this low for forever.

Re: Any point in collecting clear glass decanters?
The problem with decanters, apart from being breakable, is they were made in huge
quantities over a long time, so not especially rare, nor funtional nowadays.
Certain styles seem to better, look out for the ones that are "pinched in" in the
middle, no idea what they are called though.
Funny but certain post-war designs are still worth more!

Re: Any point in collecting clear glass decanters?
The really pinched in ones are called Glug Glugs after the noise they make pouring. In fashion late 1880/1890's great things to own if you can find them. If you do see one look at the stopper. The ones I have seen have a blown round ball, but it is often broken or replaced with a more traditional cut glass stopper. They made them in various colours to match the liqueurs. Seen some Danish copies from the 60's about but the English lost the art of making them way back before the 1st world war so those ones are rare. They also often have silver collars so dating is easy.
But you wish you never mentioned it now lol

Why not fill them with your favourite alcoholic beverage(s). So much more refined than pouring it straight from the bottle
