found this at a car boot sale not far from my area... when purchasing this item an elderly gentle man was at my back hoping i was going drop it as it isn't my field.. but decided to go for it because the casting is amazing.. the gentle man said to me he wanted to offer £100 for it so i new it might be worth something

Re: what can you tell me about this exquisitely made military cannon gun.
I just had a discussion with my boss who is a military buff. He suspects that the metal pieces are 1800s but that the wooden components are replacements. He says the Maltese cross indicates Malta or Knights of Columbus.
Over here, in Canada, he would expect to pay up to $600 for something like this. He thinks that the cannon might have once been able to fire ceremonially but that that the 'touch hole' might have been filled in due to the discolouration at the top of the barrel near the non-shooting end (my terminology, not his).
Hope this helps.

Re: what can you tell me about this exquisitely made military cannon gun.
The carriage looks like its made out of a thick plywood, implying Victorian or later in age. There doesn't appear to be a hole for the fuse, implying its a late copy. It also doesn't have any of the extra bits one would expect on an original piece like dolphins. It lookalike its a whitish metal rather than the brass/bronze one would expect if it was an original piece. It should also have test firing numbers/letters, if it was an original military piece.
All in all its just an ornament. Probably made fairly recently.

just had a look at it once again and judging from the metal work... it is brass metal that has been discolored over the years... when you look at the circles line decoration then you will see the brass metal underneath... i have seen a cannon dealer online will email him about this piece... because he sold one similar to the one i have now.. but without the stand and handle.. so is best i email him as he or she deals only on antique cannon gun.

perhaps this gun cannon was silver plated when it was first made or maybe later.. because i see no reason why the brass metal is coming throw some parts of it.

Does it have a hole for the fuse (touch hole)? If not, it's just a replica/ornament.
What size is the barrel?

Am afraid I cannot find any hole but there is a part at the end of it, that looks like is been filled or repaired... Maybe that is the hole am not certain... Just awaiting the specialist I contacted regarding this piece that deals on only cannon guns.

That's tiny. I thought the plywood carriage was thick hand cut Victorian ply, but this is just regular ply that's been stained.sunnyices2 wrote:lenth is 10cm long and the gun hole itself is 1cm in diameter

Sounds like a ringer to me; someone planted there to make you want to buy it.
There are good canons going on ebay for a quarter of that.
