I've been buying yunomis and chawans for the past few months, so posting them here as they come in (Also see the Mark Smalley thread for a lot more).

Two salt glazed ones by Ron Philbeck, Shelby, NC, USA, looking suitably rustic

A few years ago the "Gnarly Dudes" did make the use of shells on wood-fired pots a bit of a cliche but this is the real thing - a wood fired chawan from Shigaraki by Hajimu Kato.

Kato's mark is at 11 o'clock in the last picture under the ash.

Superb!

Re: Teabowls

Question: Is not a drinking vessel a personnel thing? What 'feels' good for one might be poor for another. Might look great but useless in the hand. I like to use things.

I know wine drinking did not take off until glass was available to store it (bottles) and to drink from. (Late C17th - C18th)

A thin rim allows sips where a thick (stoneware or earthenware) rim only allows gulps - Why tankards are crap for wine. So it's vital to pick these up is it not?

Do you all have favorites on the shelf and different in the hand?

This morning we finally have the plasterers in to repair the ceiling in the back room. When that's done I can paint it, then move the furniture back in, then empty the boxes in the lounge, then buy the all glass display case I've been promising myself, then arrange the teabowls in the display case, then take a photo and show you all how good they look together.

Jakatsu (snakeskin) Karatsu Bowl, with a traditional snakeskin glaze - although to me it looks and feels like lumpy frog-spawn.

Steve Booton - He's recently started potting again and built a kiln in his backyard. Can't remember if this is from his first or second firing.
