Walnut box
Hello, I just don't know where to begin with this one. Neva seen anything like it before. Your help is most certainly needed. The box has 48 holes, about 2" Deep split into 3 sections. Also there are 48 slits. Only 32 are directly visible. Two of the outer sections are fixed to the inner wall of the box. The middle section is supported only by four hinges. It could be some sort of storage box. I've had this box for a week now and still not managed to find any information. The box looks aged and worn, probably due to the amount of usage or handling during its time. Please can you help me.

Re: Walnut box
How big are the holes? Looks to me like a cigar or cigarette box.

Ah, that is very possible, presumably for field trips, but wouldn't it need a catch to prevent it opening and the tubes falling out?

Re: Walnut box
Holes are about 3/8" in diameter. Test tube storage box was part of my search. To be honest I was put off by this as I thought the box was too decorative in shape and not for that purpose. The box is well made and the lid is a tight fit. The joints at the corners of the bottom of the box are not something I have seen. Too much effort seems to have been made in the design, epecially when you look at the curves around the box area. The pull up handle is all part of the lid and not a separate piece. I've pinched a cigarette from my neighbour and it does fit easily into the hole. I know cigarettes in the early 1900's were a lot smaller. Not convinced that this box is for cigarettes.
If the holes were meant for test tubes, what was the purpose in making the slits, especially the ones that are not clearly visible, as the outer sections are fixed? I just like yourselves are at a loss with this one.
, but appreciate your rapid response.

Re: Walnut box
The slits are probably to prevent sticking, or if the item has got stuck, so it can be levered back out again.

Re: Walnut box
Yes! that probably seems likely. The holes were bored just to allow the slides threw. Why did I not think of that
Just a question though. Given the size of the hole. Does test tubes come in that size?
I'm just still concerned about the designer box for that purpose
