There should be a prog on Telly like Crimewatch. "Potwatch"
Were you in the area? Did you see anything? Who made these pots?
The police have arrested someone from South London who is helping
with enquiries! We know who you are.

All I had was a couple of coffee pot lids and they tried to stitch me up, suggesting that we were accessories.

Slipware Tankard, Mark JH - Peter Fishley Holland, Jedburgh, Scotland

Post by RoyJ99 on October 14th 2016, 8:12 pm

Hi folks. Picked up this lovely slip trailed tankard today, impressed mark looks like JH or IH, reminds me of Joyce Haynes mark, wondering if it's a Scottish potter as I'm based close to Edinburgh and I've seen a few pieces with this mark over the last couple of years.

Thanks

Roy

We will know one day, but un-Id'd at the moment.

Thanks Denby, hadn't thought of fH, having looked at the other posts with this mark wondering if somewhere in southern Scotland is where they are being produced.

Yes, I'm forever tripping over the buggers. Damned careless shepherds should take better care of them.

Ha, we need a thread to offer a reward, Ala crimewatch, for info on these marks.
Someone out there knows something!
Were you there when the potter made this piece?

I saw this tankard in the charity shop in Edinburgh and forced myself not to buy it because it would only have set me off again agonising about who this mystery potter is. I already have several of his (her?) pieces in the house to taunt me. A Scottish or Northern England location has been suggested in the past, but our combined efforts still don't seem to have solved the riddle.

Whoopee! Finally! At least we were correct in placing the pottery somewhere around the Borders. And his family connections also explain the style and quality of his work. How did you find out, Naomi?

An eBay seller listed one with the attribution and I asked if he was sure, and he said the family had bought it from the potter personally back in the 80s. I showed him another example (below) and he said definitely Peterís work.
Did he move to France? †Maybe why heís not in the Marks book

It's great to find an answer to this after so many examples all over the place.

I don't know whether he moved from the Borders but when the Marks book was first being produced a couple of short pieces in Ceramic Review were written to ask for people to send in their marks, whether they were professional potters or not. If you answered fine, you were included but, if you didn't see it or couldn't be bothered you didn't appear. I have met many potters over the years, who knew nothing about it and so were missed. Some had been added to subsequent editions.

It was always a frustrating mystery because the pots were so professionally made, and too numerous to be by a foreign potter. Glad itís finally been resolved.
