Large 'arum' shaped vase

Post by lindylou08 on November 14th 2012, 3:52 pm

Hi
Just discovered this site - brilliant, and I'm hoping that one (or more) of you clever people can help with identifying this vase. I know I love glass but sadly know very little about it.

The vase is heavy, stands 29 cm at its highest point and the base has a small, shallow depression 4cm diameter. The surrunding area is scratched and at first I though it was hiding a signture, but sadly there isn't one.

My first thought is Iittala, maybe by Timo Sarpaneva or Tapio Wirkkala. If so it should be signed.

Dartington does a "Florabundance Calla Lily Vase Dartington Crystal", but the body is more rounded.

if only! Very similar but I think the 'Chanterelle' by Tapio Wirkkala is more elegant, with a slimmer stem, the top is wider and has wheel cut lines. my vase is definitely not signed.

Well even if that is a ground out pontil mark on the base I would not rule out that it is High Street Modern. If it is not signed then I would doubt that it is Timo or Tapio straight away. If it were Dartington at 29 cm I would expect an acid etched mark somewhere at that size. Without the original label it is going to be hard to track it down but I will keep an eye out.

Reminds me of some of the Sklo Union vases with flared rims, but I don't know any with a lily shape, and they'd be pressed glass, so without the ground pontil mark.

Contemporary vase, available in florists and the like selling glassware. They may be produced in China, Thailand, India or anywher else producing volume glass at present.
