Hi
I'm trying to find out how old this would be . A maker would be good too but imagine it is rather generic.

This came with it and not sure if it  means anything to anyone - it may have been written last year!!

Thanks

Hi Lindy, how big is it? and a pic of the inside may just help.
Big Ed would be the best person I think for this type of rustic
art pottery.
Doesn't ring any bells, it doesn't look like Torquay anyway.

Looks turn of the century. Since its stamped Southall, and it was dug up in Southall, I guess it was a local pottery. Looks like tavern-ware.

I'm thinking earlier Dan, where is Ed when you need him?

Anything "dug up" is likely to be 19thC or earlier.

Denby  Shock . That thought went through my mind ( very fast ). I wonder if they made themselves tankards for their ale ????

As requested a shot of the inside   .................and its 13cm high  12cm diameter

I'm also attaching closeups of the 3 marks that I can see. It looks almost as if they may have been added later. One even looks like gold paint  (?slip)

Lindy, if it were so, but Martin bros was stoneware.
It could well be a continental "Majolica" from the glazes.
I don't mean the tin-glazed earthenwares, but maybe French
Belgian, German?

There were a number of potteries in Southall over the years. Hopefully the other markings can ID this one.

Looks to be a functional and everyday bit of pottery from one of the many factories that popped up in London in the late 19th century. The colours used I have seen of many items from the 1870/1880's so I would suggest that is when it was made. The Southall bit could be an indicator of who made it, the kiln location (many potters sent items to be fired at large company kilns in the area) or the buyers location. Not sure you will ever find out. It is an attractive thing though.

Afraid not. I believe they were at Fulham Pottery for a time.

Thanks all for your thoughts

I'm not sure that anyone was suggesting that it was Martin Brothers   Nuh-huh

Although .....  The Pottery was started in Fulham in 1873 by Robert Wallace Martin (1843–1923), [2] who had trained as a sculptor. In 1877 the business was moved to Havelock Road, Southall, Middlesex, where it remained and several of the brothers were ultimately buried in the cemetery along the road....(Wikipedia)

it's an odd feeling when you don't really like a pot but you are still jealous of it's owner Um...
