Hi Pip seeing your first item has reminded me of a small Buchan my mum has - not sure what the number/references mean but underneath her's it says 256/5 m2m - 50 with a black painted letter P Buchan Portobello Scotland marke impressed into the base but not with the brown mark like yours.

Hi, if it's got the Portobello mark then I believe it's pre-1971 (that's apparently when they stopped using that mark). The pattern is appropriately called thistle - still in production nowadays.

My Mum used to work at Buchan's when it was in Portobello and was the chief decorator by the time the company moved to Crieff. The Portobello mark was still used after the move but I believe the later pieces had a Made In Scotland stamp that the older pieces don't have.

I'm happy to see there is still interest in the pottery as the factory was a huge part of my life when I was little.

The only pieces she would bring home were the slightly flawed ones that didn't pass their quality control. I have one bowl she did with the thistle pattern on it and a friend in Edinburgh found a casserole with the Hebridean pattern on it in an antique shop and bought it as a gift.
I'll post some pics later today.

Needless to say I treasure these pieces and hope to expand on them as the years go by.

Hello !! I am in New Zealand, and have had this big old stoneware jug for many years now. I was wondering if someone would know how old it might be, and if it is collectible, or an idea of it's value please?

This is the stamp on the base. I do not know what the numbers mean, but at least I know it is from Scotland with the name Buchan. Thanks for any help you might have Excellent

Yours seems to be post-1949 production (possibly from the 1960s-70s, brought over by people emigrating from Britain).

The numbers would relate to the pot shape and decoration.

For values search ebay for Buchan stoneware (completed listings). I don't know about New Zealand, but they fetch around £10 over here; the patterned ones are more desirable than the plain ones.

Probably from the 50s.
I have a massive Buchan collection, but I haven't seen one with a studio-type glaze
like that before, most unusual!
Shape 43, size 10, pattern/glaze K3.

So - as a newbie - does the 10 represents the size? It is 10" in height.

I could not find another example anywhere on the Internet. Do you imagine it has much value?
