Mary Rich

I am sure many of you are familiar with the gold and lustre work of Mary Rich, who originally trained with Harry & May Davis, followed by a period working with David Leach.

Below is a small vase that I bought recently, followed by information kindly supplied to me by Mary: -



"It was propably made in the early 1970's, shortly after I had moved from Falmouth to set up my workshop here at Cowlands, near Truro.
The pot is white stoneware, salt glazed, once-fired, in an oil fired kiln. The top was dipped in an iron raw glaze, with an inlaid decoration of a manganese slip, with 2 bands of iron oxide on the white body."

Note: I have photographed the vase in order to show Mary's personal seal near the base.

Not typical of her current work, so i'm guessing its an older piece, or am I way off the mark on this one?

Yes, it is one of my pots.  It's hard to be precise, but it is from the 60's or 70's.
It is an unusual shape for me with the waisted shape.  The 'H3' on the bottom refers to a glaze that I was testing.
In those early days I had many clay bodies and several different glazes and did a lot of testing to try to perfect my technique.
I think the clay body in your pot would be a coarse white stoneware.  It is of course salt-glazed.
I don't think I can say any more about it - but I do quite like it still !

I'm such a mupples  there is also PG incised on the base, does anyone know who this could be?

I'm pretty sure this is an early Mary Rich dish.

She's sold through Pyramid Gallery, so maybe it's a reminder it's for them.

Would think it's more likely the type of Green used, so a sort of test piece, but probably still sold normally.

Mary sent a lovely reply to my query.

She said the little teapot is early 1980s and the PG on the base refers to the copper glaze.
Mary also said that this glaze is not compatible with gold lustres and therefore not many pieces in this colour.

Could you please help me to identify this vase with an impressed mark which to me looks like the letter m.

Edited to add that Mary has confirmed she made these cats (and owls) as kiln fillers (hence the flat shape) in the 70s or 80s.

Here's a tiny teapot of Mary's. I wonder if this is also 1980s...

It looks earlier to me with the cane handle - they seem to have first been used in the UK in any quantity during the 1970s.

Mary Rich vase

I finally found a gilded vase with a vibrant green.

I am new to this an I think my first post didn't work...I have two pots that I a trying to identify both with clear marks ( impressed) on the base. I will try again...
This one has a much rougher texture and more rustic look.
