Bowl with S mark, ORKNEY - SIDNEY J SMITH, KNOWTOO POTTERY

There's a Andrew Appleby. Fursbreck Pottery, Orkney. I don't know his mark, but it might be one of his.

i know noting about this potter either when i did my research on orkney the result came out to be a city or a place in Scotland lol

The Orkney Islands are off the North of Scotland and there is a pottery studio there called Scapa Studios, which is what the S might stand for.

I wouldn't rule out Naomi's suggestion and you could contact both by doing an internet search and getting their details that way.

Looks to me like Andrew Appleby's work. His Fursbreck pottery is at Harray on the Orkney Mainland, and he calls himself the Harray Potter. Has a little shop selling his pots in Stromness, a lovely little town. Best thing there is the Pier Arts Centre, which (unexpectedly) has a world-class collection of St Ives school and related artworks. Don't miss it!!

Haven't seen an S on his pottery before, but I suspect that it might possibly simply denote a second.

It does look like it's stamped with an apple - sideways on above the Orkney stamp.

what will you call this then? measuring height 7cm and diameter is 10cm, is it just tea bowl or what is it called in studio pottery world?

A bowl if you want to be truthful.

By my estimation that's a pint of tea! I'd call it a small bowl.

from what I understand for the japanese tea ceramony the bowl is quite big with only a small amount of tea in it as it has to be whisked, tea bowls made by modern potters often seem to be too small for this

You are correct there about tea ceremony bowls used in Japan being larger than some bowls made by non-Japanese potters that they call teabowls. However, the Japanese make bowls that they use for drinking everyday green tea in that should strictly be called "usuchawan". These are smaller but both would have foot rings unlike this bowl from Orkney where the Tea Ceremony and drinking green tea, I believe, isn't widespread.

Everyday you see people selling ordinary bowls, sugar bowls and the like as "teabowls". To my mind suggesting that this bowl has anything to do with tea would be dishonest.

We have only just found this forum. The mark on this pot is that of S J SMITH KNOWTOO POTTERY ORKNEY.
