tea bowl, i think

Post by bistoboy on Sat Jan 28, 2012 10:27 pm

Hi all,

is this little pot a tea bowl or yunomi? I can't see any sign of a potter's mark on it either, so any guesses or suggestions for maker would be great.

make that Chawan - apparently a yunomi should be taller than it is wide

In Japan a yumoni is a cup for drinking green tea out of and is taller than it is wide, as you say. A chawan or teabowl is used in the tea ceremony and is usually 3 to 4 inches deep (7.5 to 10 cm) and around 4.5 to 5 inches wide at the top (11.25 to 12.75 cm). It can be wider and then may be called a summer teabowl. There is also a winter teabowl, which is the same shape as a yunomi but larger. Your pot does look chawan/teabowl shape but maybe a little small? Depends on the size of the hand.

Difficult to say where it might have been made from a picture.
