John has been making traditional Calder Valley slip-decorated domestic wares using local 'Toff-Tom' clay at his pottery in Mirfield, West Yorkshire since 1973. He also makes reproductions of historic pieces ranging from medieval tiles to Delft ware. I think his pieces are much more than just copies. They have a fineness and lightness of touch which I think makes them well-worth collecting.

Both the pieces in my collection were found in my local Antique Centre last year. This one is a reproduction of a seventeenth century three-handled 'tyg' in red earthenware with a clear glaze. 8.7cm (height).

I've since sold one of this pair of feathered slip mugs (and for more than I paid for the pair). They are so simply decorated but really nice pieces, well-made and good to use.

Continuing on the "reproduction" theme, John does make replicas of Thomas Toft chargers and the like for organisations such as English Heritage and the National Trust.

These replace originals that are too valuable to have on open display in some of the houses that they look after.

............. and in his spare time he does stand up comedy!

Things like that always seem amazing - you'll have to mention how his father's fame is spreading!
