Hi, this is a SECLA (Portugal) piece from the 70's or early 80's, not so good as the ones they made in the 50's and 60's. Rita

For the ones who like fruit pyramids, here's one from the 60's made by SECLA. It has more interesting colours and better quality glazes.

This is an earlier mark, the logo with the S inside a vase shape was used during the 80's and early 90's.

yes I'm quite serious, the stunning colours around the boar coupled with the textured clay bring to mind the energy eminating from all living things, for me the panel is a great piece of art

I can see what you mean Dan, there's a very primitive feel to the symbolism used; I particularly like the depiction of the heart.
It brings to mind the Lascaux and Altimera cave art, and it's probably the type of thing that Cro-Magnon man would have produced had he had later technology

Are Secla and Holkham related in anyway (business wise)? Today I found to Secla mugs that were exact facsimiles of Holkham Owl Eye mugs

Hi, is this the mug?
I'm asking because I only know Holkham mugs without the eyes. This shape of mugs was produced by many diferent factories.
This one is made by SECLA, that also made it without the face.

The design is by Hansi Staël (1913-1961) and it was made between 1950 and 1957, although it continued to be produced during the 60's. I believe this package is from the early 60's, when clear plastic was fashionable and often used in packaging. I don't know if you can see it in the pictures, but it's a very old type of plastic and printing.

SECLA (Portugal) - Page 2 Empty 50s/Modernist (?) Handpainted shallow bowl - any thoughts?

Post by goyjus June 4th 2012, 3:20 pm

This is a recent purchase which I think is fabulous.

I'm guessing it dates from around the 50s and the only mark on the back reads 'Specially painted for Mr & Mrs K A Stelzer'.

Any info gratefully received.

Hi, this is a Hansi Staël design for Secla.
Hand painted from an original by her.
I'll post some more designs later.

The original design was made between 1950 and 1957 and it's a part of a line called "Portuguese Motives", depicting traditional professions, like fisherman, fish sellers or fruit sellers.
These designs were reproduced until the 80's, at least.
