NOT 20thC but maybe someone will know?

Post by bistoboy on Sun Mar 27, 2011 10:40 pm

ok, so it's a bit earlier than most of you peeps are interested in, but i'm hoping someone can help. It has a red anchor mark on the back which sometimes points to Chelsea porcelain, BUT i know they were heavily copied. Samson (France) could be a candidate also then i guess. It's all hand painted with areas of gilding.

There was a Venetian factory called Cozzi which used a red anchor which closed in 1812, could your plate be that early do you think?

i did think it was early 1800, because of it's handpainted nature, the patter and of course the general wear and tear. But Venetian was not something i'd considered! i'll try and do some more research. many thanks for the suggestion.

Chelsea pottery used a red anchor 1752-1758 , occasionally painted in blue or purple

took this plate to the Antiques Roadshow at Lulworth today and saw John Sandom. He confirmed that it is by Cozzi (Venetian) c.1780 and a better value than i'd anticipated. Very happy bunny. Happy
