Unusual Pontil mark.

Post by lyndhurst44 on Mon Jan 24, 2011 4:25 pm

Hi,
I purchased this top hat shaped vase over the weekend for a fiver. I love it. but it has an unusual pontil mark which at first I thought resembled a flower but since using some powder on it to make it easier to see, it now looks like a bird with lines seemingly running off it (Sunbird?). Any identity help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Bryn

The vase measures 6" tall and with a 6.5" diameter across top.

No idea about the prunt on the pontil but the vase itself looks 'Maltese' to me - could it be Phoenician?

And could the bird be a Phoenix - I wonder? Might be on the right track there Pip. I'll send them an email and photo.
Many Thanks.
