Hartley Wood & Co.

Post by Nic on Tue Sep 14, 2010 11:31 am

Beautifully coarse vases with thick swirls of colour (this effect is called 'Antique Glass' by HW&Co).

The rim isn't damaged - it's been roughly sheared off and fire-polished. Snapped pontil mark to base.

c.1920s-30s - consistently neater and much more light-weight vases were produced by HW&Co after this period.

gorgeous shape and colours Nic. I'm not keen on their 'vase' shapes (or at least the limited few I've seen pictures of) but this is lovely.

Oops, missed these comments.

I like the early Hartley Wood stuff - it was less about fancy design and more about showing off the qualities of the coloured glass (ostensibly just stained window glass, which was their main trade). The later, tidier, pieces just feel like lazy pastiches of the earlier 'rustic' vases.
