Maria Kariis Tall Blue Vase

Post by nickbug on Sat Aug 28, 2010 5:25 pm

Hi

I found this vase today and bought it for only £2. The label at the top has a Maria Kariis printed signature then underneath it says 'Design Maria Kariis'. There is another label near the base saying it is handmade. There was obviously another label on the base as there is a trace of glue there, but the label is long gone. The vase is 36cm high and the base diameter is 8cm. I have done a bit of research this afternoon and discovered she has had a tie up with Holmegaard amongst others. I have seen pictures of some of her work but cannot see any mention of this vase. I wondered if anyone knows anything about it. It's obviously not very old as she seems to be a recent designer.

What I am most interested in is the hundreds of 'flecks' in the glass. Being new to all this I was wondering what might have caused them and if there was anything I could do about them. I really like it anyway and for £2 it's a bargain in my eyes. Any information is appreciated. Thanks.

She also designed for Ikea, which is where this vase hails from (the second label, see-through plastic featuring a monochrome image of a glassblower and the words 'handmade quality' is Ikea's standard glass label). The glass would have been made in China, India or Poland (very little of Ikea's production is made in Sweden)

The 'flecks' looks to be tiny bubbles in the glass - probably an intentional design feature.

Edit: Beaten to it!
